What is CDN Routing?

CDN Routing is an intelligent traffic-routing mechanism within a Content Delivery Network (CDN) that determines the most appropriate Edge Server to handle a user's request.

Instead of directing every request to the origin server, CDN Routing automatically forwards users to the nearest or best-performing CDN edge server that already stores cached copies of static content such as:

- Images

- Videos

- CSS files

- JavaScript files

- Documents and other static assets

By delivering content from a geographically closer location, CDN Routing significantly reduces latency, minimizes the workload on the origin server, and dramatically improves page load speed.

How CDN Routing Works

Intelligent Routing Mechanism in a CDN

At its core, CDN Routing functions as an intelligent traffic coordinator.

Whenever a user requests content from a website, the CDN performs several real-time evaluations:

- Identifies the user's geographic location using their IP address.

- Analyzes current network conditions, including latency, bandwidth, server utilization, and physical distance.
